Merchant Navy Career Overview

A general, non-promotional overview of rating-level work on merchant ships and how study fits in.

The Merchant Navy is the commercial shipping sector: cargo ships, tankers and other vessels that carry goods and sometimes passengers. Ratings are crew members who work under officers on deck or in the engine room.

Deck and engine sides

Deck ratings support navigation and seamanship: steering under direction, keeping lookout, maintaining the deck, handling ropes and mooring. Engine room ratings assist the engineers: routine maintenance, lubrication, cleaning, valves and pumps, watchkeeping rounds and painting. These duties are described in the MEK oral material on this site.
