MEK Preparation Tips
Practical tips for preparing for the Marine Engineering Knowledge (MEK) topics: machinery, safety, tools and watchkeeping.
By Shashwat · ClassZee · Educational article, not official guidance.
MEK covers the machinery and routines of the engine room. A steady method works better than last-minute cramming.
Learn systems, not just lists
Start with what each machine is for: the main engine turns the propeller, the auxiliary engine turns the alternator, a pump pressurises fluid, a valve controls flow. Details then attach to a clear picture.
Use the oral pages first
Read one oral topic, such as valves and pumps, then try a matching MCQ set.
Memorise checks as sequences
Before starting a pump or compressor there is a logical order of checks: oil level, valves, free turning, power. Practise saying the sequence aloud.
Safety every time
Most MEK topics end with a safety step. Always include it in your answers.
